Rides like a Dream
Alia - Borrowed "Anders", Summer 2024I have ridden many bikes but Anders rode like a dream. Stable, smooth, comfortable - ideal for long or short rides within the city. I absolutely loved the experience! What a wonderful initiative. I hope we can continue this and many more such programs to popularize biking and make all our cities bike accessible.
Made life so much easier
Roland - Borrowed "Eske", Summer 2024I had the great pleasure to rent a cargo bike from SHIFT during the summer of 2024 for a 2 week trial and I have to say it made life so much easier,
We used the bike on several occasions to purchase groceries
We brought 2 x 20 pound propane tanks to be filled and transported our 2 dogs for further distance walks
One of the best moments was biking through Yellowknife ( from Old Town to Downtown) and a car stopped beside us to tell us “I need to get one like these, so friends won’t ask for my truck again”
I still laugh about this today.
I went everywhere by e-bike, instead of driving!
Nancy - Borrowed "Freya", Summer of 2024I highly recommend borrowing a bike from the SHIFT Program . It’s a steal of a deal.
Where else can you borrow a high quality new to you E bike for 2 weeks free with all the accessories you will need?! You will get to try out your bike with instructions at Sombe Ke Park and take a spin around the nearby trails until you feel comfortable enough to ride home.
I fell in love with Freya almost immediately! I rode Freya everyday for 2 weeks wherever I was going.
I hardly used the car or the bus at all. I didn’t need to.
Here is what I liked:
No problem going up the School Draw hill more then once a day or riding on a windy day (which is often these days).
It was so easy and yet I was still getting exercise using “Eco“ mode for everything.
Using a pannier and a basket I went everywhere instead of driving.
More and more friends are getting e bikes so there are people to ride with. I am comfortable renting an e-bike in other places now that it is familiar.
I prefer the less busy roads as the trails are often quite busy.
The Downside!
The bike routes in Yellowknife need work. The old town hill is very uneven and covered in gravel.
The Old Airport Road route is inconsistent and requires crossing back and forth and ends abruptly.
It is often hard to find a place to lock your bike downtown or at Walmart, Bike racks are often full or non existent.
There are not any really pleasant long rides like other cities.
I am 77 yrs old and I love my e-bike which I bought at Overlander. The owner provides excellent service and assembles it. When you are my age you you stop procrastinating and just do it.
Highlight of the summer: Sharing this experience with my kids
Elaine - Borrowed "Gry", Summer 2024I am just writing to share my experience with the amazing YK Bike-sharing program this year! It was one of my highlights of what I did with my children! I am not the most comfortable biking on the roads here in town as the roads can be quite busy with big vehicles and no bike lanes. But I was able to gain more confidence when I got to use the borrowed bike in my part of the town (Niven area). But what I was most thankful is that I got to share this experience with one or two of my children. There’s just something special to be able to take the kids out together on the bike! (One of my children who’s autistic was really happy for me to take him or pick up from school with the bike-it was just so wonderful)!
Thanks to the amazing organizer and volunteers running this free bike program!
Best, Elaine
A Total Blast!
Sara Komarnisky - Borrowed "Gry", Summer 2024We borrowed Eske and took her daily from Old Town to NJ Macpherson School to downtown, and then back again. Anyone along our route would have heard the kids yelling "turbo mode" or "hi!!!!" from the bucket. It was a total blast and made zipping around town fun and easy. Thank you!!
The Kids Loved it!
Anonymous - Borrowed "Gry", Summer 2024I borrowed Gry over the summer and it was amazing. Three kids or solo, this thing was a joy to ride, handled well and the kids loved it! Definitely will be buying a cargo bike in the future :)
It was SO Easy and Fun!
Amanda - Borrowed "Gry", Summer 2024Our family (two grown ups, 4 year old and 6 year old) are semi-regular year-round cyclists with our double chariot and Volt Bike since early 2021 (we're a one-car family). We bike in cold, wind, and rain (but most often sun) but not all the time.
Investing in an e-bike has made it so much easier to bike with kids, even on days with not great weather (or low energy). But. Our kids kept growing. It was getting harder and harder to fit kids, snowsuits and all the 'stuff' of day to day in our current system. So we were starting to bike less on longer routes.
We've looked longingly at cargo bikes but couldn't convince ourselves of the outlay, especially as our kids got bigger. We signed up immediately this summer (and told all our friends).
The learning curve was quick, and we were off to everywhere-- work, daycamp, berry picking, the farmers market. After using a bike trailer for so long, packing up into the cargo bike was SO EASY. And the high quality motor was a huge improvement over our current bike. We 'bike pooled' with friends to daycamp, hit up the farmers market and whizzed around town happily. Also, it is way easier to answer questions and stay on top of kid conflict when they're in front of you (and not in the chariot trailer yelling indecipherably). The last day of our bike loan-- we took our existing e-bike and biked from our house on School Draw all the way to Fred Henne for a birthday party. No cars, no trying to find parking on a busy summer day.
We're back to seriously considering a cargo bike and the trial has made a big difference in our perspective on it as a useful tool-- even as our kids get bigger and become independent community cyclists.
